Vines on the slope above the lake

The estate belongs to Callum's aunt and had never hosted anything larger than a family lunch. We spent a year making it ready without making it look ready: a gravel lane widened by a metre, power run to the lower block, a well tested for one hundred and twenty.

Priya's family came from Surrey and from Ahmedabad. The Friday evening was a sangeet in the barrel hall with a Gujarati kitchen brought in from Vancouver and the doors open onto the lake. Saturday's ceremony was Anglican, held at 5 p.m. at the end of a row of vines with the lake behind. The two days were not asked to match.

Dinner ran down the centre of the vineyard between two rows, one table for one hundred and twenty, with the harvest crew's lanterns hung from the wires above. The wine was all from within six kilometres.
